"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
— Hebrews 12:1-2

Hebrews 12:1-2 serves as the climactic conclusion to chapter 11, the "hall of faith." Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses—countless faith pioneers surround us like spectators in an ancient arena. They are not merely historical figures but witnesses who have already completed the race we now run.
The phrase "lay aside every weight" echoes Greek athletes stripping before competition. But notice: we cast off not only sin, but "every weight"—things not inherently evil, yet hindering our course. Excessive worries, unbridled ambitions, unnecessary entanglements—all become obstacles to be shed.
The text then pivots decisively to our focal point: "Looking unto Jesus." Not our own strength, not our competitors, not the crowd—only Jesus. He endured the cross's shame "for the joy set before him." Our salvation was His joy.
When exhaustion comes during Lent's race, refocus your gaze on Jesus. Because He finished well, we can finish well.
🙏 Today's Prayer
Lord, grant me the courage to lay aside the weights and sins that hinder my race. Like the great cloud of witnesses, may I keep faith unto the end. Above all, give me eyes fixed solely on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. As He saw joy beyond the cross's suffering, help me endure this journey with patience and perseverance, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
