In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus offered a genuine prayer before His crucifixion. Through the plea, "Let this cup pass from me," we see the human frailty of Jesus—His desire to avoid suffering. Yet His subsequent words, "Not my will, but thy will be done," reveal a soul's decisive surrender of its own will to God. This is the true form of prayer.
We, too, face difficult circumstances in our lives. In times of illness, unemployment, or broken relationships, we can present our earnest petitions to God. Since Jesus did this, our honest prayers are never lacking. God knows our weakness and holds dear our tears and sighs.
However, true faith is not completed by our own will alone. As Jesus demonstrated, we must add prayers of surrender: "Thy will be done." This is not abandoning our desires, but trusting God's wisdom. God beholds our lives from a far greater height and prepares blessings greater than we can imagine.
Jesus also instructed His disciples to "watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." This means that when we pray, we must awaken our souls and seek understanding. Just as Jesus prayed twice in Gethsemane, we too must become people of prayer who continually seek God and His purpose.
🙏 Today's Prayer
Father God, I thank You for making me Your child. Like Jesus, I sometimes approach You with a fearful and weak heart. When I face difficult trials in my life, I am grateful that I can openly present the sincere desires of my heart before You. Yet, Father, I do not seek merely my own will, but earnestly pray that Your good will be accomplished. Grant me faith to trust in You and the grace of prayer that awakens my spirit. Keep me from temptation and make me a disciple who obeys Your will in all circumstances. I pray in the holy name of Jesus. Amen.
