"Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."
-- Exodus 20:12

The Ten Commandments are divided into two parts: the first four deal with our relationship with God, and the remaining six address our relationships with others. The first commandment about human relationships is 'Honor your father and mother.' God identified parents as the starting point of all human relationships. The first connection we form in this world is with our parents—God chose to prioritize this bond above all others.
Parents' Day often becomes a single day of gratitude. But the 'honor' spoken of in this commandment runs much deeper. The Hebrew word 'kabed' means 'to regard as weighty or heavy.' It means not viewing your parents lightly, not dismissing their words carelessly, and not ignoring their elderly years. Honor is not an event—it is an attitude, a habit woven into the fabric of daily life.
Through our parents, we first learned God's love. Even imperfect parents—through their hands we received food, through their voices we heard our names spoken for the first time. Today, a single phone call, a text message, a visit—these are the beginnings of honor. There is no need for grand gestures. Simply regard them as weighty.
If your parents have already passed away, expressing gratitude through their memory is also a form of honor.
🙏 Today's Prayer
God, thank you for my parents. I am grateful for their love and for the grace of growing up in their care. Help me to honor them in heart and deed today, and let my words and actions express this gratitude. For those whose parents have departed, grant them peace and the ability to give thanks in memory. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
