"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

In the middle of summer, when many are exhausted by heat and plagued by anxiety, Paul's words to his young disciple Timothy speak directly to our fears. God has not given us a spirit of fear. Instead, what the Lord has granted us is power—a spiritual strength that enables us to overcome our weaknesses and fulfill our responsibilities. This power is not our own, but comes from the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
Fear is followed by love. The love God gives us liberates us from fear, for perfect love casts out fear. When we love our brothers and sisters, when we love our neighbors, and above all when we love God, we find freedom from anxiety. This love is not self-centered; it is a willingness to sacrifice for others.
The third gift is a sound mind—the ability to control our desires appropriately and maintain wise judgment. With a disciplined mind, we can examine circumstances carefully and make decisions grounded in wisdom. These three gifts—power, love, and a sound mind—enable us to stand firm and move forward, no matter what we face.
We may fear many things in this world. But as believers in Jesus Christ, we have not received a spirit of fear. The Holy Spirit within us supplies us with power, love, and a sound mind. Therefore, we can move forward courageously, serve in love, and judge with wisdom. Let us remember these precious gifts from God throughout this day.
🙏 Today's Prayer
Dear Father in Heaven, I thank you for giving me a spirit of power, not of fear. In the midst of summer's weariness, I believe that I can rise up by the power you have provided. Fill my life and my home with the spirit of love, and grant my heart the grace of a sound mind. Whenever fear threatens to overwhelm me, help me to remember your word, and lead me to walk in power, love, and a sound mind. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
