📜 Today's Meditation

Mark 8:34 is one of the most radical invitations in all of Scripture. Just moments before, Peter had boldly proclaimed Jesus as the Christ — and then turned around and rebuked Him when Jesus spoke of His coming suffering and death. Jesus responded with sharp words: "Get thee behind me, Satan." Then, calling both the crowd and His disciples together, He spoke these words to everyone.

The phrase "deny himself" uses the Greek word 'aparneomai,' the same word used when Peter denied knowing Jesus three times on the night of the crucifixion. Jesus is asking us to do to our own ego and self-will what Peter did to Him in fear — to say, "I do not know you" to our selfish desires, our pride, and our craving for comfort and security.

Lent is the season to practice this self-denial. The cross was not an accessory in the ancient world — it was a symbol of public shame, suffering, and death. To take up one's cross meant to embrace the path of sacrifice willingly. Jesus walked this road first, and He invites us to follow. During these forty days, what does your cross look like? What is God asking you to lay down so that you can walk more freely in His footsteps?

🙏 Today's Prayer

Lord Jesus, Your call is both terrifying and beautiful: deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me. I confess how often I have chosen comfort over obedience, my will over Yours. During this season of Lent, I come before You with open hands. I release the things I have been clinging to — my pride, my plans, my fears. Give me the courage to face my cross without running away. Let me trust that the path of surrender is the path of true life. You who carried the cross before me, be my strength as I follow You. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
