"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me."
— Psalms 51:10

Psalm 51 is a profound prayer of repentance written by David after realizing his sin with Bathsheba and being rebuked by the prophet Nathan. On this first day of Lent, we stand together before David's confession. The expression 'create a pure heart' uses the Hebrew word 'bara', which signifies the act of creating something from nothing - an action only God can perform. Through human effort or resolve alone, one cannot fundamentally purify the heart. Only God can create a new heart within us.
Lent is a 40-day period of meditating on Jesus' wilderness temptation and suffering, a time to reflect on our own sins and weaknesses. In this holy season of humbling ourselves and seeking God's grace, let us, like David, honestly lay bare the state of our hearts before God. The renewing touch of God will shape and mold our hearts.
🙏 Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, as I begin this Lenten season, I lay my heart before You just as it is. You already know the hidden sins and wounds within me, the hardened habits that dwell in my spirit. By my own strength, I cannot purify my heart, so I ask that You create in me a new heart. Renew my inner being with a steadfast spirit, that during this Lenten season I might draw closer to You. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
