"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."
— John 10:11-18

When Jesus described Himself as the Good Shepherd before His disciples and the people, He conveyed a profound message of love and dedication. Reflecting on how Jesus cares for us as a shepherd tends to his flock, we are amazed at the depth of His love. Beyond simply providing food and shelter for the sheep, the shepherd's willingness to lay down his own life when danger threatens exemplifies unconditional devotion and sacrifice.
We often find ourselves taking on the attitude of a hired hand, using others for our own benefit. But Jesus did not spare His life in caring for us. This was not merely a religious teaching but a real action, perfected through His death on the cross and His resurrection. Jesus knows us and has enabled us to recognize His voice.
This relationship is not one-sided. Just as the Good Shepherd knows His sheep, Jesus knows each one of us personally, ensuring that we are never left as lonely, unknown beings. At the same time, we have the promise that we can know Jesus and hear and follow His voice. This is the foundation of true faith and the nature of the spiritual relationship we should pursue.
As you go through today, hold firmly to the assurance that you are under the protection and guidance of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Though fears and difficulties may come your way, Jesus knows you and gave His life for you. Find security in that love, and strive for a life that responds to the voice of Jesus.
🙏 Today's Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for reminding us today of the truth that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is with us. When we are weary and confused, grant us ears to hear and follow the voice of Jesus. Let the assurance of His love for us transform our lives and enable us to practice love toward one another. When we fall into selfishness, help us never forget the love of Jesus, who gave His life for us. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
